Why do we consider nuclear energy a clean energy source when the process of mining uranium is known to cause environmental and health hazards?

Loic Bethel Dje
Every mining process is environmental and health hazards linked.
Nuclear energies are considered clean because they originate from either the fusion or the fission of nuclides. This creates a geochemical balance within the surface of the earth and elements.

Renewable energy may be a better option for emission than fossil fuels, but they are not completely free from pollution. They emit greenhouse gases into the air, carbon dioxide, or worse – methane. How can this be mitigated to make the atmosphere cleaner?

Loic Bethel Dje
Can we define what a dirty atmosphere is ?
It is atmosphere with concentrations of air pollutants beyond threshold values.

In the course of production of renewable energy, there's pollution. Consider the production of energy from geothermal sources.

Do you think it is feasible to have a 100% Renewable Energy-based Electricity System in Africa in the distant future?

Loic Bethel Dje
Though renewable energies are said to be from unlimited sources, theses sources have to be evaluated?
What is the ratio between the available un-depletable sources to the population's need in Africa?
A 100% feasibility won't be possible

What's renewable energy and how will the adoption process in Africa be considering the fact that Africa is considered a third world

Loic Bethel Dje
By definition Renewable energy originates from non-depletable sources (can a source really be considered as such? Energy is neither created nor destroyed)
Renewable energy sources are considered as sustainable and environmentally efficient.
Renewable energy adoption, is on a minimal scale implemented in our African nations, from solar panels, to small scale windmills, and hydro power.
Have you thought of biogas as renewable Energy as well?

If you have, then you will notice Renewable energy is a well known practice in Africa.

The use of third world is pejorative and subjective, as the world can be classified using rankings. We rather have in Africa, lesser disciplined abilities towards the utilisation of resources, whether human, physical, social and economical.

What are the benefits of renewable energies, its relative impacts on African's economy and reduction in climate change?

Loic Bethel Dje
Africa is not affected by climate change as compared to major pollutants. The Copenhagen accords specify this better.
Renewable energies can boost up the economy's energy management efficiency but what impact will it have on the consumer's purchasing power?

Every source of energy has its own effects. For a sustained renewable energy, what are those significant effects and the challenges/barriers these energy sources will face if any?

Loic Bethel Dje
Let's take the examples of the following:
1. Solar Energy
It’s estimated that in 2017 1,6% of the worldwide generated energy came from solar sources. At the same time, solar power also contributed to 20% of the total energy growth in this same year. (Youmatter.world). This type of renewable energy comes directly from the capture of solar radiation. Here, the solar radiation is absorbed by specific sensors and rebroadcasted following 2 possible operation modes:
Capturing sun rays and directly converting them into energy through photovoltaic solar panels;
Capturing, collecting and turning the sunlight into heat that warms up water or air.

The possible barriers will be the following:
- The availability of construction and conservation structures for solar plants.
- The training and cost of installations for proper utilisation.

How Will the effectiveness of the environmental policy of the continent be increased in order to achieve sustainable energy development based on the concept of green economy in the shortest possible time?

Loic Bethel Dje
On a candid level, environmental policies don't really matter in the case status of Africa for renewable energies.
The use of sustainable energy sources in Africa is mostly in order to curb the costs of electricity distribution.
90% of the population is concentrated in less than 21% of the land surface and the average per-person travel time to settlements of more than 50,000 inhabitants is around 3.5 hours, with Central and East Africa displaying the longest average travel times.
If this ratio was greater, then it would be of greater concern.

One long-term concern with the use of nonrenewable resources is their lack of sustainability. Eventually, these limited resources will either run out or become too difficult to mine and our energy infrastructure will lack needed fuel sources. Is there any way we can fuse the two energy sources to enhance sustainability of power in Africa?

Loic Bethel Dje
The use of renewable energies sources is to produce energy sources such as electricity.

Energy is neither created nor destroyed.

Look at biomass, it originates from the concentration of organic matter, the more decay, the more the biomass.

So, fusion is the real deal.

In Africa specifically Ghana, renewable energy is considered a lot but not really an option because we produce less carbon emissions and environmental pollution as compared to other countries. The question now is, in this scenario is it important for a country like Ghana to opt in for renewable energy?

The use or existence of renewable energy is not directly related to carbon emissions. Ghana had a 3.54% carbon footprint in 2016, while Africa's global compounded carbon footprint is expected to be 3.8% by 2021. This means that Africa's contribution to the total of 76% of CO2 emissions is extremely small.

Renewable energy sources are more of a convenience factor than a global concern. In remote villages, using a solar-paneled lamp at night is easier and safer than using a kerosene lamp. How much more expensive is kerosene today compared to 20 years ago?

Renewable energy will not be able to replace conventional energy. Take note that the amount of fossil fuels used to manufacture an electric car's battery is greater than the amount used to drive 60 (average fuel consumption) cars over a 100km road.

For a family, having a well dug within their property is safer and easier than having the kids run to the streams at night out of a rampant fear of watercraft. Renewable energy sources play an important role.

How many years do we need to wait for geothermal sources?

Is electricity, by the way, not derived from a renewable source? Dams are used to generate electricity from naturally flowing streams that are fed by an inland flow of water.

The more living things die, the more biomass there is. Renewables will always be a question, as old as recycling and as new as 7th generation electric vehicles.

I am ready to learn more from you.

What is the effect of offshore wind energy in Africa and how fessible is it? Do you see offshore wind energy getting more ground in renewable energy?

Off shore wind energy in your context should refer to the use of winds blown from the land towards the water bodies. It is important to evaluate the amount of offshore wind energy we have available.

Every project is feasible depending on the necessity, emergency and cost of the projects. Offshore winds utilisation is not a profitable one for Africa.

Of course, offshore wind energy is set to grow. At the moment only about 1.7 Tera Watts are mobilised on an average using windmills. Wherever need be, the resources could be better utilized. It is not Africa's priority and shouldn't be.

What Africans could do is research and optimistic analysis of such a project, bringing it to lower scales could be better. For example, having a team of mechanical and electrical engineering students designing local windmills in localities to assist with increasing access to electricity (this is the end of point of wind energy utilisation).

With the adoption of blockchain technology, in years to come, what will be its effects on energy sustainability in Africa?

The goal of blockchain is to mobilise digital currencies. The link with energy supply is a far-fetched but not very much insignificant link. The structure of blockchain should be similar to that of internet communication (fluidity of data flux). Blockchain technology will be influenced more by economic transactions between energy suppliers and consumers in the energy sector. The blockchain technology issue is narrowed down to purchasing ability and mobility. Whether the energy is renewable or not, the question becomes relevant if "cryptos" are used to pay. Many countries already use the P-2-P transaction, which allows traditional currencies, bank cards, and crypto vendor platforms to be purchased (such as Binance without any publicity). When considering this question in terms of mining these coins, the CPU units, According to the Digiconomist's Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index, one bitcoin transaction consumes 1,449 kWh, or roughly 50 days of power for the average US household. Many African businesses consume more energy than this over the course of 50 days. As a result, it has no bearing on Africa's energy sustainability. Africa's most pressing issue is how to manage the energy it generates (how the laws work and how much people can buy). I hope I've quenched your thirst.

By the way, how many countries are to adopt a currency which doesn't satisfy the basis laws of currency credibility?

Dear Sir Thanks for giving me the opportunity I'm kevin Ayuk A computer Engineering student at the faculty of Engineering and Technology University of Buea. I have great interests in the Energy Sector in Africa because we all know there is nothing industrious without Energy . My question is Renewable energy is good for it's great environmental advantages but many experts say it is not great enough to run the manufacturing sector . Hence you need to produce in very large quantities. This production is a whole economic concept on its own . Should African Countries spend billions of USD in taking renewable energy rather than spending in more important sectors like Education and Health?? We can't talk of economic independence without these sectors .Don't you see this challenge as one of the blocks towards renewable energy? Thanks

How many fishers will be ready to tell you, fishing at large scale is very profitable? How many even in your environment will consistently encourage and mentor you to gain more.

The role of an engineer, beyond his analytical sense and political ambitions is that of developing substantial growth even low scale.

As a computer engineer (that's how you ought to be addressed even by yourself: the consciousness of who you are) no one hinders you from developing programs and tools to solve issues in your community. Renewable energies utilisation could be part of it.

Have you ever thought of how in coaction with other engineers around you, you could mobilise waste resources in Buea to make it active?

What of developing plants which will assist the women along the Muea market to easily wash their fish for example?

What of extension to use streams, to generate electricity for Student hostels or automation of water plants in student hostels.

Your question shows you have interest in solving Education and Health issues? What plans have you taken towards that? If you do consistently, the same funding agencies will come to you, then we could assess your loyalty to solve Africa's problems with your skills.

The earlier we stop the blame game, the better.

You might also want to host a session which people who share interest in your field. This particular session comes from a public demand to elucidate with persons having interest in renewable energies.
